The
Salisbury Ice & Fuel Company was built and began producing
ice on
East Horah Street in 1912. The business became so successful that,
at
one time, 21 trucks tried to keep up with orders from homes and
industrial plants. During the height of summer, traffic jams were
not
an uncommon sight around the ice plant; it wasn't an unusual occurrence
to see cars piled up for four blocks. Salisbury Ice & Fuel
entered the
beer business in 1933 as a distributor for Lion Beer. Time has
wiped
out most of the complex and all but the tall section of the building
was demolished in 1974. The Foundation is currently looking to
sustain
this property through adaptive reuse.
