| “There
was a time in the American South when cotton mills resembled
castles of old. The medieval institutions sat imposingly at
the edges of the landscape, often on hills above the shoals
of streams. While the lord controlled the keep, the lower
ranks crowded in the courtyard sorted out their lives in as
richly adaptive style as they could. [snip] Jim Rumley has
given those who care about remembering the Southern past a
rich tableaux in his thoughtful study of Cooleemee, North
Carolina. [snip] He deftly sorts out the fact and fiction,
weaving a weft of local lore into the warp of scholarly insight.”

| The
Hall House, showcase of the West Square Historic District
and owned by the Historic Salisbury Foundation, is open for
tours weekends from 1 pm to 4 pm, or by special request. For
thirty five years, volunteers of the Foundation have been
collecting and researching information on Dr. Hall, who was
an educator, a Civil War doctor and a businessman. The picture
that emerges from this research of Dr. Hall and his family
will both surprise and fascinate any lover of Southern history. |
